Currently we have two competitions available-in September we participate in the Special Olympics Delaware Fall Festival and in June we participate in the Special Olympics Rhode Island Summer Games. We also compete in the One More Tri in New Jersey. Athletes are selected for these based on their local participation during the year.

Skill level and equipment:  Athletes must be able to ride a bicycle and provide their own equipment (bike and helmet)

Cycling is a great family activity! In order to participate an athlete needs to be able to ride a bicycle and have their own bike and helmet. Most of our rides are on weekends and we usually ride on the W&OD in Virginia or the C&O Canal Towpath in Maryland.

Athletes must be able to ride a bike for distances of 10-50 or so miles in one day (rides are generally in the 15-35 mile range on the Cross County Trail and the C&O Trail and longer on the W&OD.)

Our rides are “loop rides”, which means that an athlete and parent/guardian may turn around at any point and go back to the start if they are not able to complete the entire distance with the group.

New Riders-A parent or sibling must go along on the rides until it has been determined that the athlete has the skills needed to ride independently (follows rules of the road for safety while riding in a group.)

Sometimes our rides include sharing the roadways with cars, so we need to make sure that athletes are able to ride safely in traffic.

Bikes-Athletes must have their own bikes, helmets and water bottles or hydration systems. Depending on the ride, road bikes, mountain bikes or hybrids are needed.

Mountain bikes or hybrids are good for any terrain, while road bikes are only useful on the W&OD Trail.
