Powerlifting
Get your Hulk on...
Our training program is designed to help our athletes grow stronger and a bit more disciplined with the goal of competing in up to four powerlifting tournaments each year.
Training process
Since we are a sport that requires improvements in strength and balance, we practice every Tuesday from 7-8pm starting in September and running until State Games in June. We are one of the few Special Olympics sports that go the full year to ensure that the athletes have the time to get stronger. We have over a dozen athletes participating each week and a great group of coaches well-schooled in technique and physical development.
Season
Our season starts in early September and runs through June when our athletes compete at the Virginia Special Olympics State Games.
Despite being a seasonal sport, area 26 holds powerlifting practice year round in order to advance the mission of special Olympics by keeping those with intellectual disabilities in powerful shape all year!
Powerlifting athletes participate in several area competitions each season leading up to the State Games. Competitions are open to any athlete who regularly attends practice and can perform the lifts appropriately.
If you would like to join us, or observe a practice and decide whether to join the program, please contact the Powerlifting Coordinator, Bill Whiteside at the link below.
Event schedule wll be sent as soon as it is available.
